Healthcare

The acoustic environment in healthcare facilities has a profound impact on patient recovery, staff wellbeing, and operational effectiveness.

The acoustic environment in healthcare facilities has a profound impact on patient recovery, staff wellbeing, and operational effectiveness. Research consistently shows that poor acoustic conditions can increase stress, disrupt sleep, impair communication, and ultimately affect health outcomes.

At Anderson Acoustics, we specialize in creating healing acoustic environments across all healthcare settings – from hospitals and clinics to specialist care facilities and rehabilitation centers. Our approach addresses the unique challenges of healthcare acoustics, including patient privacy, speech intelligibility in critical areas, sleep quality in patient rooms, and the control of equipment noise.

Working closely with healthcare planners, architects, and clinical teams, we develop acoustic solutions that support the healing process while meeting the practical demands of modern healthcare delivery. Our evidence-based approach ensures that acoustic design contributes positively to patient experience, staff performance, and clinical outcomes.

"Maria at Anderson Acoustic integrated well with the other Sunninghill design consultants during the design development phase of the South East Coast Ambulance Building at Banstead to ensure the acoustic criteria was met for both the BREEAM rating and planning conditions." How we do it

At Anderson Acoustics, we help our clients achieve their vision when it comes to building acoustics.  We work collaboratively with architects, planners, designers and contractors to create great sounding spaces.

Concept Stage

We undertake detailed noise and vibration studies at concept stage to establish site suitability, achieve planning consent and direct the design of the building, identifying acoustic issues from the outset.

Develop Design

We work closely with the design team to develop building design, providing input across all relevant aspects from construction materials to mechanical services.

Technical Design

We provide detailed design advice and reviews of design proposals and tender returns to ensure the specifications are robust and in line with the design requirements, including sustainability standards such as BREEAM and WELL Building Standard.

Construction and Handover

We provide on-going support to contractors and the design team throughout the construction phase, dealing quickly with ad-hoc acoustic issues as they arise on site and ensuring industrial noise reduction. When complete we undertake acoustic testing to enable sign-off before the building is handed over to the end user.

Noise & Vibration Mitigation

We provide noise and vibration mitigation advice and design for a range of building services and occupational related activities.

Our team supplies strategic input on building design to minimise future noise and vibration issues and to avoid expensive retrospective mitigation measures that might arise from inaccurate planning.

Room Acoustic Design

Many specialist rooms, such as classrooms, offices, halls or performing arts venues require careful control of the internal sound propagation. We provide acoustic design input that takes into consideration room shape and size through to material selection and placement to create the best possible acoustic conditions.

3D Acoustic Modelling

We use state of the art 3D modelling software to design the sound of a space. Using acoustic wireframe models, we can analyse thousands of possible surface geometries and materials to find the optimal acoustic solution.

SonicRoom Auralisation

Using our SonicRoom and advanced acoustic modelling tools, we can model and listen to the sound of a space at the design stage. Often acoustic concepts seem abstract, but with SonicRoom, hearing makes design decisions real.

Evidence-Based Acoustic Solutions for the Healthcare Sector

Acoustic design in healthcare is about more than just noise reduction; it is about privacy, sleep quality, and clinical accuracy. We provide specialist consultancy to ensure facilities meet the highest standards of care and compliance:

HTM 08-01 Compliance: Expert guidance to meet the Health Technical Memorandum standards for acoustic design in hospitals and clinics.

Mental Health Environments: Specialist design to create calm, safe, and supportive acoustic conditions in psychiatric and therapeutic settings.

Medical Research & Laboratories: Precision vibration and noise control for sensitive imaging equipment and high-performance research labs.

Patient Privacy & Confidentiality: High-performance sound insulation strategies for consulting rooms and patient wards to maintain dignity and confidentiality.

Why Use Us?

Here are some of the ways that we can help in this sector. If you've got a project in mind, our contact details are below or you can send a message to the team directly using our contact form .

Expert advice for your project

With a team of 25+ people we are one of the largest specialist acoustic consultancies in the country with a vast amount of collective experience in building and architectural acoustics.

Intelligent solutions

Whether you are adopting a new-build, refresh, refurbish or reuse approach to your development, we provide appropriate and intelligent acoustic advice - balancing cost, functional and aesthetic requirements to deliver great sounding, fit for purpose buildings.

Passionate

We believe that buildings should be designed for how they sound, not just how they look. Better sounding buildings are more enjoyable to be in and improve overall quality of life. Helping to make this happen is our passion.

Sustainability

From BREEAM requirements to Code for Sustainable Homes, we provide advice on sustainable acoustic solutions. Compliance with standards and regulations is important, but we like to think that any investment should not just be a compliance exercise but should also bring added value and improve the quality of life for future users.
