Background
This project came along through our long standing relationship with VolkerFitzpatrick. They were appointed main contractors on UCL PEARL, a unique facility for conducting experiments on how humans interact with their environment. The Facility provides a large main flexible laboratory space with integral two storey Cross laminated Timber (CLT) creative work hub.
Challenge
Various room types were proposed to support and execute research experiments within the facility. The main challenge was ensuring the design of each space met a bespoke set of acoustic performance requirements to allow them to be used as intended and in harmony with other adjacent spaces.
From an acoustics perspective, the key objectives of the projects were:
- Achieving a Reverberation Time limit in the large main flexible laboratory space
- Achieving high levels of sound insulation between creative and listening spaces in the two storey CLT structure
- Ensuring all areas met the requirements of BREEAM towards ‘excellent’ certification (internal ambient noise, sound insulation, reverberation and plant noise emissions)

What we did
Working closely within the design team we undertook a detailed review of the contractor led design proposals to ensure the finalised design would meet all acoustic performance requirements for the client and BREEAM;
We undertook 3D room acoustic modelling to sense check acoustic finishes in the main laboratory space which resulted in a significant saving for our client whilst still meeting project requirements;
We used our previous experience and in-house test data working with CLT structures to ensure separating walls, floors and critical junction details were adequately designed to ensure all areas within the creative work hub could be used simultaneously;
We liaised directly with the M & E consultants and undertook detailed calculations of mechanical ventilation noise and advised on attenuator performance requirements to meet all internal ambient noise requirements.
The Result
Successful project delivery, all BREEAM credits met and a few pennies saved!
