Background
Staticus UAB commissioned Anderson Acoustics to review the proposed façade specifications for the Nýr Landspítali Hospital project in Reykjavik, Iceland.
The review focused on the acoustic performance of the façade, which comprised lightweight opaque panels and glazed units, supported by both stick and unitised aluminium façade systems.
What we did
Our objective was to ensure the façade complied with the project’s acoustic requirements and to identify any measures needed to address potential risks of non-compliance.
The review was carried out as a desktop study, drawings on available laboratory test reports, performance data for comparable systems, and calculation techniques.
The Challenge
The project requirements varied across different locations, with performance targets reaching up to 63 dB Dn,f,w for vertical and horizontal flanking, and up to 40 dB Rw+Ctr for external sound reduction.
Methodology
The review methodology included:
- Analysing laboratory test reports and performance data for comparable systems
- Conducting calculations to estimate expected sound insulation and flanking performance
- Providing recommendations for enhancements where necessary to achieve compliance
Key Findings
Assessment of Performance
- Vertical and Horizontal Flanking: The proposed design was found to meet flanking performance requirements in most locations. However, certain areas required additional measures to achieve the highest performance level of 63 dB Dn,f,w
- External Sound Reduction: Using available test data and Insul software predictions, we assessed the façade’s sound reduction performance. Detailed calculations were completed for frames, opaque panels, and glazing systems. Minimum glazing performance levels were determined for different parts of the façade to ensure compliance
Recommendations
- Opaque Panel Lining: In specific locations, spandrel panels and opaque panels along separating walls should be lined internally with cement fibre boards
- Plasterboard boxing: In some areas, exposed parts of spandrel and opaque panels along separating walls should be enclosed with plasterboard lining
Conclusion
The desktop review of the proposed façade specifications for the Nýr Landspítali Hospital project demonstrated that the proposed details were capable of meeting the project’s acoustic flanking requirements, provided the recommended measures were implemented.
With respect to the building envelope sound insulation performance, the review also determined the minimum glazing sound reduction specifications necessary to achieve the required façade performance.
