Women in Acoustics

Following the recent announcement of our Director and Education Sector Lead, Emma Greenland, as a Finalist for the Women in Construction category of the South East Construction Awards 2024, we have been reflecting on how we currently fare as an employer in relation to supporting women working in construction.

Only 12% of the Institute of Acoustics membership are women, yet at Anderson Acoustics we have more than double the proportion of women acting as consultants. We also have more women on the board, 33% versus an average of 28% amongst top construction companies.

We actively seek female and other under-represented staff through affirmative action.

Our structure empowers women employees working at all levels to be able to take up Employee Owner Trustee roles, which fast tracks their boardroom experience to prepare for leadership roles.

Flexible hours and hybrid working are a given for all employees, enabling all carers access to an equitable life balance.

We strive for gender pay parity. Whilst construction companies struggle to reduce the gender pay gap with differences of 12-32% in the top 10 companies, our average median difference is less than 5%, having improved significantly in the last 5 years.

As a side note, when compiling this piece, our marketing officer typed in ‘Women in Acoustics’ searching for a suitable image on adobe stock images library and was overwhelmed with pictures of women in the countryside playing guitars! Must do better…..
