We are celebrating with our very own Emma Greenland, Director and Education Sector lead as she has been announced as a Finalist in the Women in Construction category as part of the South East Construction Expo & Awards 2024. Well done and we are all behind you!
The Education Sector Lead at Anderson Acoustics with over 20 years’ experience working in the field of acoustics and noise control, Emma is a specialist in classroom acoustics for inclusion, and architectural acoustics. Following her award-winning PhD research and publications on acoustics of open plan classrooms, and project experience throughout the education sector, she co-authored the Department for Education’s acoustic performance standards for schools (BB93 2015), and the accompanying Institute of Acoustics/Association of Noise Consultants (ANC) design guide. Her most recent research focuses on improving access to listening in the classroom for specific types of special education need towards inclusive listening environments for aural diversity. She has recently acted as a Subject Matter Expert for the Department for Education to advise on classroom acoustics and new guidance. She also has a practical understanding of school operations through trustee and school governor roles.
She has collaborated and continues to collaborate on key research in the field with other leading academic-based and industry-based peers demonstrating herkeen passion to share knowledge and develop understanding of the key acoustic considerations for all working within the Education sector. These collaborations have included with female academics:-
Professor Bridget Shield, a leading researcher on acoustics and on the effects of noise on children and how it affects their ability to learn and with Professor Julie Dockrell (FRCSLT, FAcSS), a Professor of Psychology and Special Needs at the UCL, Institute of Education and qualified as both a clinical and educational psychologist.
Emma works tirelessly with architects, contractors and schools across London and the South to ensure good acoustic design is at the forefront of any new build/refurbishment scheme (schools, colleges and universities). She also regularly speaks at industry conferences including at Education Estates, helping to bring acoustics to the construction sector and develop understanding. She delivers CPDs to schools, architects and contractors advising how they can make reasonable adjustments to classrooms and other learning spaces to improve the acoustic performance and ensure students are not disadvantaged when it comes to inclusive listening, which is particularly important for students with Special Communication and Hearing Needs.
A dedicated passionate female professional striving to make a difference and leading the industry to apply the science of acoustics to improve the built learning environment for students and staff alike. She is also a mentor for young professionals in the early stages of their career in acoustics.
