This month we are proud to announce that we have joined the Design in Mental Health Network (DiMHN), a UK-based charity dedicated to improving the environments in which mental health care and support are delivered.
In environments where healing and learning intersect with emotional and sensory sensitivity, sound becomes a powerful force. Whether in a hospital ward or a special education classroom, acoustic design is not just about reducing noise – it’s about creating spaces that support psychological safety, emotional regulation, and inclusive care.
🧠 Mental Health and Sensory Sensitivity: Why Sound Matters
People experiencing mental health challenges or living with neurodiverse conditions such as autism, ADHD, or sensory processing disorders often have heightened sensitivity to sound. In poorly designed acoustic environments, everyday noises – alarms, conversations, footsteps – can become overwhelming, triggering anxiety, distress, or behavioural responses.
In healthcare settings, excessive noise has been linked to sleep disruption, elevated stress levels, and slower recovery. In education, it can impair concentration, communication, and emotional regulation, particularly for students with special educational needs (SEN).

Hospitals are inherently noisy, yet they are places where rest and recovery are paramount. Research shows that noise levels in many healthcare facilities exceed recommended limits, contributing to patient discomfort and staff burnout. Acoustic design strategies – such as sound-absorbing materials, quiet zones, and zoning of noisy equipment – can transform chaotic environments into therapeutic spaces.
In mental health units, acoustic control is even more critical. Patients may be hypersensitive to sound, and lack of control over their auditory environment can exacerbate feelings of fear, aggression, or withdrawal. Thoughtful acoustic design supports privacy, calm, and dignity – key components of person-centred care.

In special education settings, sound can either support or sabotage learning. Students with autism or SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs often struggle in echo-prone or noisy classrooms. Acoustic treatments – such as low-reverberation materials, quiet breakout spaces, and sound zoning -help create environments where all students can thrive.
Designing for aural diversity means recognizing that some students need less stimulation, more control, and greater clarity in communication. Schools that prioritize acoustic design reduce reliance on ear defenders, improve engagement, and foster a sense of safety and belonging.
