Co-work spaces are a melting pot of different businesses and individuals all with their own needs and requirements.
Designing acoustics within co-work spaces to fit all these needs is not possible, however, if ignored during the design process it will quickly become apparent when clients start to work in the space. If people cannot work/concentrate they will just move on to the next one, where perhaps the acoustics is a little better.
We are not saying anybody needs to throw the kitchen sink at the issue, but we do advise acoustics be part of the development and things such as the following are considered during the design process:-
Acoustic Zoning – Thinking about the layout and how it can work best during the early design stages, for example placing loud flexible open plan areas right next to quiet zones.
Reverberation Control – Allowing a cost for the provision for acoustic finishes to walls/floors/ceiling to support concentration e.g. in densely populated open plan zones, or in shared meeting rooms to support effective communication.
Privacy – Ensuring the wall constructions between meeting room spaces are adequately selected, detailed installed to support privacy between adjacent meeting rooms.
