5 St Andrews Street, Cambridge

Background

Anderson Acoustics was commissioned by SME Corporation (2) Ltd to undertake an odour risk assessment in support of the planning application for the proposed change of use retail premises at 5 St Andrews Street, Cambridge, to a KFC mixed restaurant and hot food takeaway serving southern fried chicken style food.

The proposed development is within the local authority of Cambridge City Council (CCC).

What we did

The odour assessment and mitigation measures followed the guidance presented in the EMAQ+ Guidance for the Control of Odour and Noise from Commercial Kitchen Exhaust Systems. We also considered the Greater Cambridge Sustainable Design and Construction Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) requirements and policy requirements.

Our risk assessment indicated the potential odour risk is very high and as such very high level of odour and grease mitigation would be required.  An external flue would not be allowed by planning as the site is Grade II listed.

We recommended that a planning condition to be put in place for the ventilation and odour abatement system to ensure the proposed extraction system is compliant with the guidance in the EMAQ+ “Control of odour and noise from commercial kitchen exhaust systems” guidance and the Greater Cambridge Sustainable Design and Construction SPD to prevent harm to amenity.

Project Progress

Planning was granted in August 2022 with the Committee concluding that ‘A satisfactory odour risk assessment has been provided and the specification of the extraction system has been revised to account for the results of that assessment’.

We'd love to hear from you
