Our Education sector lead Emma Greenland reflects on why it’s time for an update of the DfE school acoustics standard, BB93.
Reason number 1:
The terms used under ‘special hearing and communication needs’ are out of date and no longer fit for purpose, and the last update was over 10 years ago.
Reason number 2:
Lower acoustics standards are set for refurbishments compared to new builds. We are now refurbishing buildings built long after 2003 (defined as new builds). Confusing! Adopting the BB93 refurbishment standard for these buildings would make conditions worse, which contravenes Building Regulation no. 4.

Reason number 3:
2026 Government plans for a more inclusive mainstream need updated acoustic criteria. BB93 assumes learning happens when the class is quiet, attentive and listening to teacher.
‘No problem’, said no teacher or student in real life, ever 😊.
We need calming classrooms for every learning opportunity – during low level disruption, practical work, group work, social learning, you name it. This CAN be achieved within budget and whilst meeting other design constraints.
The assumptions made regarding a typical classroom environment are outdated as are the guidelines for acoustic performance standards. An update is long overdue to allow for better inclusivity for all pupils.
