The Noise Oscars – Soundscape Award

What a wonderful evening at the Noise Abatement Society‘s John Connell Awards 2025 on Wednesday 22nd October. We were honoured to sponsor the Soundscape Award again and acknowledge the Winner and Highly Commended teams/projects as below.

๐Ÿ† ๐“ฆ๐“ฒ๐“ท๐“ท๐“ฎ๐“ป: Institute of Acoustics (IOA) and the UCL Institute for Environmental Design & Engineering (IEDE), For delivering the first certified training course of the landmark educational framework that embeds soundscape thinking into professional environmental practice. Through the Certificate Course in Soundscape Assessment (CCSA), the IOA Course Development Committee have created the first formal training programme equipping practitioners, regulators, and researchers with the skills to deliver evidence-based, ISO aligned soundscape assessments. This pioneering collaboration bridges science, policy, and design, advancing health, wellbeing, and sustainability in line with emerging UK soundscape legislation. The Course Development Committee, chaired by Dr Christopher Barlow (KP Acoustics) with members from Apex Acoustics Ltd Acoustics, the The University of Salford, the Noise Abatement Society, the Llywodraeth Cymru / Welsh Government, The Open University, the University of Surrey, and the Institute of Acoustics, is recognised for its expert contribution and commitment to advancing the field.

Gloria Elliott OBE, NAS CEO said, โ€˜This John Connell Award recognition is highly deserved for the excellent collaborative work to produce and deliver the first certificate course on Soundscape Assessment, assisting further advancement in this pioneering field of acoustics. Congratulations to all who contributed.’

The project combines innovative acoustic measurement, psychoacoustic analysis, and citizen engagement to map and enhance Castleroy Greenwayโ€™s acoustic environment. Through nature-based interventions, such as strategic tree planting to enrich natural sounds, the study improves urban tranquillity, supports community wellbeing, and provides a scalable model for sustainable soundscape planning across Ireland.
Gloria Elliott OBE, NAS CEO said, โ€˜Quiet areas are vital for the cohesion and sanity of a community – somewhere to escape the stress and strains of everyday life. Many congratulations to Limerick City and County Council and Noise Consultants Ltd for their ground-breaking scalable soundscape model for quiet environments that may be replicated by other Councils.โ€™

This innovative system transforms traditional noise monitoring by providing real-time acoustic assessment across rehearsal and performance spaces, enabling immediate interventions to protect musiciansโ€™ hearing. By combining bespoke microphone arrays, software algorithms, and dynamic tracking, the system allows immediate intervention to reduce harmful noise exposure, improves acoustic management, and ensures regulatory compliance. This innovative solution sets a new benchmark for noise risk management in high-performance sound environments and demonstrates a practical, scalable approach to enhancing wellbeing and sound quality.
Gloria Elliott OBE, NAS CEO said, โ€˜Hearty congratulations to Stantec for this exemplary innovation – real-time noise-monitoring protection for musicians that will benefit players universally.โ€™
