Anyone who has supervised a school lunch service will recognise how quickly sound levels can rise. This research provides a useful way to explain that change using two linked concepts: reverberation time and acoustic capacity.
Reverberation time: what it changes in practice
Reverberation time (RT) describes how long sound persists in a space after the source stops. The research explains that, in the context of dining halls, longer RT tends to be associated with a more difficult listening environment, particularly for speech. In the study’s analysis, increases in RT were associated with higher proportions of pupils reporting discomfort, annoyance, and difficulty having conversations in their dining hall.
The Lombard effect and ‘self-amplifying’ spaces
The research references the Lombard effect: as background sound increases, people unconsciously raise their voices to be heard, which increases the overall noise level further. In dining halls, this matters because occupancy noise is largely conversational and can escalate quickly when the space “holds” sound.
Acoustic capacity: a practical planning tool
Acoustic capacity is described in the study as the maximum number of people a space can hold while maintaining reasonable conditions for conversation, assuming roughly one person speaking for every 3-4 occupants and presents a formula for estimating acoustic capacity based on room volume and reverberation time.
The key outcome of applying this approach across the five schools is straightforward: in every case, acoustic capacity was much lower than the maximum capacity implied by floor area.
This is important for school planning because dining halls are often scheduled and managed based on area capacity and lunchtime throughput, rather than whether the room can support comfortable conversation at that occupancy.
What pupils said aligns with the model
The study’s pupil survey results reinforce why this matters: a significant portion of pupils reported the dining hall as loud and annoying, and equal proportions reported it easy or difficult to have a conversation (36% each). The most consistent relationship in the analysis was between RT and conversational difficulty.
What this means for education estates and operations
For education clients, acoustic capacity helps translate “acoustic performance” into something operational teams can use:
- If the hall is regularly used above its acoustic capacity, noise escalation is more likely, and behavioural control becomes harder.
- Reducing RT can increase acoustic capacity, improving the conditions for speech and reducing the likelihood of noise build-up.
This is where design and operations overlap. A dining hall that supports conversation more comfortably reduces the reliance on supervision and workaround measures to keep sound down.
