In environmental consultancy, there is often a gap between what can be measured and what is experienced. This is particularly true of odour.
Unlike noise, odour does not lend itself easily to conventional metrics. It is transient, subjective, and highly sensitive to context, yet it is also one of the most common triggers for complaints, planning objections, and post-occupancy dissatisfaction. As urban environments become denser and building services more complex, the ability to properly understand and evidence odour is becoming increasingly important.
At Anderson Acoustics, we have invested in a Nasal Ranger® field olfactometer, allowing us to undertake structured, in-situ odour measurement. This is not simply an additional piece of equipment; it represents a deliberate expansion of our capability into an area where qualitative judgement has historically dominated.
The value of the Nasal Ranger lies in its ability to translate perception into measurements. By measuring odour using dilution-to-threshold ratios, we can move beyond anecdotal reporting and provide a repeatable, defensible basis for assessment. This is particularly important in situations where multiple stakeholders, developers, operators, regulators, and the public, require clarity and objectivity.
In complaint investigation, this capability allows us to interrogate odour events in a way that was previously difficult to achieve. Rather than relying solely on descriptive observations, we can quantify odour strength at sensitive receptors, map its spatial distribution, and correlate findings with meteorological conditions and site activity.
This leads to a more balanced and evidence-led understanding of cause and impact, reducing ambiguity and supporting more constructive resolution.
The same principles apply in planning and compliance. Odour is increasingly material in planning decisions, particularly in mixed-use developments where residential amenity sits alongside commercial kitchens, energy centres, or light industrial uses.
Field measurement provides a grounded understanding of baseline conditions and can be used to support or challenge modelling assumptions. In doing so, it strengthens the credibility of odour assessments and helps de-risk projects at critical stages.
Where this capability becomes especially powerful is in the design and verification of MVHR and ventilation strategies. Odour ingress and transfer are frequently underestimated in building services design, yet they can have a disproportionate effect on perceived environmental quality.
By measuring odour concentrations at intake locations and comparing conditions before and after filtration, we can directly inform the specification of carbon filters and other treatment systems.
This shifts filtration design from rule-of-thumb to evidence-based engineering, ensuring that systems are not only compliant, but proportionate and effective in practice, taking into account other environmental considerations such as energy use and servicing.
More broadly, this reflects how we see the role evolving. Environmental performance is no longer defined solely by compliance with discrete technical standards.
Clients increasingly expect environments that perform holistically, acoustically, thermally, and in terms of air quality and sensory comfort. Delivering this requires tools and methodologies that can bridge the gap between measurable parameters and human experience.
Field olfactometry remains relatively uncommon in the UK, in part because it requires both investment and a willingness to engage with complexity. Our adoption of the Nasal Ranger is therefore intentional. It aligns with our broader approach: combining technical rigour with practical insight to address issues that are often difficult to quantify but critical to resolve.
In this context, odour is not an outlier in environmental consideration, it is intrinsic to environmental control and management. By bringing structure, measurement, and clarity to it, we are better equipped to support our clients across complaint investigation, planning, and building services design, while contributing to environments that work as intended for their users.
