In the study of paranormal phenomena, acoustic effects significantly influence our experiences and interpretations. Here’s a look at the role of acoustic effects and why they can be so frightening:

  • Infrasound: Sound waves, below the human hearing range, can induce physiological and psychological effects resembling paranormal encounters, including feelings of dread and visual disturbances.
  • Resonance: Rooms with open windows or doors can function as Helmholtz resonators, creating infrasound that can cause discomfort or even vibrate internal organs.
  • Mechanical Resonance: Loose structures such as rattling windows or doors can produce noises often attributed to ghosts. These sounds usually result from low-frequency vibrations or infrasound caused by environmental factors or technical equipment.
  • Remote Noise Sources: Phenomena like the canyon effect and temperature inversions allow sounds to travel long distances, making distant noises seem nearby.
