Platt C of E Primary School, Sevenoaks, is Baxall Construction’s first Department for Education (DfE) project. It is a 1FE new build primary school with nursery within a soundscape consisting of rail and road traffic noise and biophilic sound from the local countryside.
DfE projects specify different acoustic performance standards which can conflict with those of Building Bulletin 93 (the normal means of compliance with Building Regulations).
We were appointed to provide acoustic design consultancy from RIBA 2 to RIBA 6.
This included support from concept design stage, completing a noise survey to establish how the existing noise source would affect the building construction approach as well as how the new school would impact the neighbouring properties.
Discrepancies in acoustic performance standards were resolved and clarified through alternative performance standards to ensure the client was fully aware of design risks and opportunities.
Detailed support was provided to ensure the closed panel timber frame solution would meet DfE standards. Natural ventilation solutions were achieved for teaching spaces.
Sound absorbent finishes were developed within budget whilst targeting enhanced accessible listening conditions for mainstream classrooms where practicable to benefit children with special hearing and communication needs, in line with latest best practice research.
The benefits of our approach brought early cost certainty on elements of the build for the client. This resulted in the acoustic design approach being very much agreed at the end of RIBA stage 3 with most items finalised very early in stage 4. This meant a significant amount of the design was completed early which then allowed the client an extended market testing period to ensure cost certainty.
‘Emma at Anderson Acoustics has been the most proactive acoustician we have ever worked with and her advice has always provided not only the answer but added information which helps to resolve design concerns quickly. I would highly recommend Anderson Acoustics as a fantastic, proactive and flexible acoustic consultancy who are great communicators.’

Dr Emma Greenland, our Education Sector Lead, has worked on a large range of education projects and has a deep understanding of acoustic performance standards for schools, having advised the DfE on the publication of Building Bulletin 93 (2015) and co-authored the accompanying design guide published by Institute of Acoustics/Association of Noise Consultants.
