Old Post Office, Kings Lynn

Background

Anderson Acoustics was commissioned by Devrim Enterprises to undertake a noise impact assessment for a mixed-use conversion of the Old Post Office, Kings Lynn. The proposed design included a commercial and residential use at ground floor, and a combination of residential use and a hotel on the two upper floors.

What we did

The environmental sound levels incident upon the building were recorded over a seven day period which meant we were able to reliably determine the typical conditions outside of any influence from construction activities in the vicinity.

The survey data were used in calculations in accordance is BS EN 12354-3:2017 to determine the required sound insulation to meet the internal noise targets on BS8233:2014, whilst taking in to account the proposed means of ventilation and overheating control.

We also considered the sound levels in the proposed terraces at first and third floor levels, which it was found that BS 8233 guideline values would be met.

In terms of noise generated by the development, we identified that the fixed plant was likely to be the principal source, and so, again based on the survey data, we set noise emission limits applicable to the nearest noise-sensitive premises in line with the Local Authority requirements.

The proposed upgrade to the separating floor between the commercial premises on the ground floor and the first floor was determined to meet the recommended sound insulation target.

We concluded the site was suitable for mixed commercial and residential use as proposed.

What this means for Planners/EHOs/Developers

We are well versed in and track updates to local and national planning policies as well as technical BS guidance to be able to provide detailed reports.
