Background
Shape London Architects commissioned Anderson Acoustics to conduct a noise impact assessment to discharge Planning Condition 12 for the residential development at 19 St Margaret’s Crescent, London.
The development, granted planning permission in September 2023, required evidence to address noise concerns related to the installation of an air source heat pump (ASHP) at basement level.

Assessment Criteria
The assessment was conducted in accordance with Wandsworth Council’s requirements, which stipulated that the noise emitted from the ASHP should be 10dB below the representative background level at any time. The noise levels were to be determined at the façade of any noise-sensitive property.
Noise Measurements
A noise survey was conducted over a 3-day period, which captured background noise data representative of the nearest noise-sensitive receptors.
Noise Impact Assessment
The assessment determined that the noise generated by the proposed ASHP installation, without mitigation, would exceed the established criteria. We recommended installing an acoustic louvre for the plant room and provided the necessary sound insulation specifications to achieve compliance. With the acoustic louvre in place, the calculated rating levels at the worst-affected noise-sensitive receptor met the required limits.
Conclusion
The noise impact assessment concluded that the proposed ASHP installation would meet the requirements of Planning Condition 12, provided that an acoustic louvre is installed at the ASHP store. This would safeguard the amenity of neighbouring residents in accordance with Council policy LP2 of the Wandsworth Local Plan.
