16 St Martin’s Le Grand

Background

Knight Frank commissioned Anderson Acoustics to provide acoustic design advice for the refurbishment of an office building located at 16 St Martin’s Le Grand, London.  From 1925 the building served as the headquarters, showroom and dispatch depot for the burgeoning Courtauld family textile business.

The refurbishment involved six floors of the building, transforming them into modern office spaces.

Key Acoustic Challenges

  • Environmental Noise: The building is situated in a busy area with significant traffic noise and nearby construction activities.
  • Internal Noise Transfer: Ensuring minimal noise transfer between adjacent acoustically-sensitive areas within offices and between office floors.
  • Compliance with Standards: Achieving compliance with BREEAM Hea 05 and Pol 05 criteria, as well as relevant British Standards for acoustic performance.

What we did

Our involvement included:-

  • Facade design: A detailed noise survey was conducted to understand the external noise environment. This data informed the design of the building’s façade to ensure adequate noise insulation.
  • Internal Noise Control: To mitigate noise transfer between adjacent spaces, we worked closely with the client to understand their privacy requirements and designed the separating elements accordingly.
  • Plant Noise Emissions: The noise emissions from new mechanical plant items serving the scheme were assessed and found to comply with both local authority and BREEAM criteria. This ensures that the building’s operational noise does not disturb the surrounding environment. To achieve this, induct attenuators were incorporated into the system, ensuring that noise emissions satisfied the criteria.

Project Progress

In August 2024 we were commissioned by Structure Tone to undertake a programme of pre-completion testing at the newly refurbished office building to demonstrate that the finished building achieves the acoustic performance targets developed at design stage.

Testing confirmed all targeted BREEAM credits could be awarded.
