Background
In April 2022, J. Murphy & Sons Limited undertook the replacement of the Nazeing New Road Bridge in Broxbourne, EN10 7AS. This project, referenced as BGK 1429, involved the demolition of the existing bridge and the construction of a new reinforced concrete and steel filler beam bridge. The project aimed to enhance the structural integrity and safety of the bridge, ensuring it meets modern standards.
Our involvement
We were commissioned to produce a S.61 application advising on a noise and vibration management plan and also delivered on a noise monitoring programme.
- Adherence to Section 61 Limits: It was crucial to adhere to the limits set out in the Section 61 application under the Control of Pollution Act 1974. This ensured that noise and vibration levels remained within acceptable thresholds, minimizing the impact on the local community and environment. Compliance with these limits was essential for maintaining the project’s legal and regulatory standing.
- Noise and Vibration Management: Given the proximity to residential areas, managing noise and vibration was a critical aspect of the project. We advised on the development of a comprehensive noise and vibration control plan, adhering to BS 5228 standards. Measures included using super-silenced generators, acoustic screens and noise barriers, and scheduling noisy activities during daytime hours. Continuous unattended noise monitoring was conducted to ensure compliance.
- Live Noise Monitoring: Continuous noise monitoring was conducted at the site boundary to ensure compliance with noise limits. This live monitoring allowed for real-time adjustments and immediate mitigation measures if noise levels exceeded the set thresholds. The use of live noise monitoring was vital in minimising disturbances and ensuring the project adhered to environmental standards.

By implementing these measures, the project team effectively managed noise and vibration, ensuring minimal disruption to the local community while maintaining compliance with environmental regulations.
