Background
The Kingsbury Road Overbridge, located in the London Borough of Islington, is a key pedestrian and cycle link across the North and East London railway lines. The bridge, once open to vehicles, had become structurally unsound and was closed for safety reasons. A full replacement was required to restore safe access for the local community while ensuring minimal disruption to rail operations and nearby residents.
The works were undertaken by J. Murphy & Sons for Network Rail, involving demolition and reconstruction over live rail lines serving the East and North London networks.
What We Did
We were commissioned to support the s.61 application advising on noise and vibration mitigation measures and to provide a monitoring programme.
Innovative Construction Methods
- We advised the installation of acoustic curtains and local noise barriers to contain construction noise;
- We proposed the use of hybrid generators and hydrogen-fueled tower lights to reduce emissions and noise;
- The loudest activities were scheduled during daytime hours wherever possible.
Safety and Environmental Controls
- Continuous noise and vibration monitoring at sensitive locations, with live alerts and compliance reporting;
- All equipment was maintained to minimize emissions, and site workers were trained in BPM;
- Materials and debris were handled to minimize noise, with night-time demolition arisings stored for daytime removal.
Efficient Project Delivery
- Detailed planning allowed for swift site setup, demolition, and reconstruction within tight railway possession windows;
- The project team worked extended hours, including weekends and holidays, to meet deadlines and minimize community disruption.
Challenges and Solutions
The proximity of residential properties, a children’s playground, and the live railway created an acoustically complex environment. Night-time possessions were unavoidable for safety reasons. To manage this:
- Proactive community protection was achieved through targeted noise control measures and real-time monitoring alerts;
- Stakeholder reassurance was maintained by transparent reporting to the London Borough of Islington and clear documentation of all BPM actions;
- Night-time impacts were successfully managed – no noise insulation triggers were met and vibration levels remained below cosmetic damage thresholds.
Result
The Kingsbury Road Overbridge was successfully demolished and reconstructed on schedule, reopening in April 2024. Our monitoring ensured that the project met all environmental obligations, demonstrating best practice in urban infrastructure delivery.

- Full regulatory compliance was achieved under the Section 61 consent;
