HS2 ML2 Sewer Shaft

Background 

The HS2 ML2 Shaft works at Gloucester Avenue, Camden was a critical infrastructure project aimed at strengthening and protecting the underground sewer in preparation for the HS2 works. The project involved the construction of a 4-meter diameter and 16-meter deep shaft on top of the Mid-Level 2 sewer. 

We were commissioned by Barhale to support the required S.61 application and to deliver an extensive noise, vibration and dust monitoring programme, to meet client and London Borough of Camden requirements. 

What we did 

  • Noise Level Predictions Noise levels were predicted using a 3D model built in Noise Map Ltd SiteNoise, following industry standards and HS2 guidelines. Various assumptions were made, including activity noise levels, ground modeling, and plant source heights.  
  • Baseline Noise Levels Baseline noise levels were established through noise monitoring conducted in 2021 prior to trial hole work. These levels are summarised for different times of the day and week, to the BS85228-1:2019+A1:2014 and HS2 reference periods.  
  • Predicted Noise Levels at Receptors Predicted noise levels at sensitive receptors were detailed for different months and times of the day, with specific addresses and noise levels provided. The predicted noise levels were agreed through the s.61 consent and used to establish if there was eligibility for Noise Insulation or Temporary Rehousing.
  • Noise and Vibration Control Measures Various measures to minimize noise and vibration were recommended, including the use of noise monitoring systems, screening of equipment, and adherence to best practicable means.  
  • Monitoring Regime Continuous noise, vibration and dust monitoring was conducted for a period of 33 weeks. Noise trigger levels were set based on the significant observed adverse effect level (SOAEL) and the noise levels agreed through the s.61 application and consent.  Automated alerts would be sent to appropriate staff members when these levels are exceeded, enabling prompt investigation and mitigation. Weekly and monthly compliance reports were provided to meet the needs of Camden and HS2. 
  • Best Practicable Means Specific control measures to be implemented during the works were recommended, including site perimeter hoarding, use of hybrid generators, and localized noise barriers for certain equipment. 

Conclusion 

The noise management and monitoring strategies implemented at the HS2 ML2 Shaft works were effective in minimizing the impact on the surrounding community. Continuous monitoring and prompt mitigation measures ensured compliance with the s.61 consent and HS2 requirements.
