Why is Demolition Noise Monitoring Needed?

Demolition contracts often require certified monitoring to ensure compliance with planning conditions, protect communities, meet stakeholder requirements, and manage environmental risk. Noise, dust, and vibration monitoring is most effective when it is proactive rather than reactive, so the measurements can be used to respond to complaints and evaluate whether they are justified or unjustified.

As well as monitoring, we produce s.61 applications, noise dust and vibration assessments, methodology advice, and management plans to form part of Demolition Environmental Management Plans (DEMP) and Demolition Management Plans (DMP), and dust management plans for planning conditions.


Why Noise Monitoring is Needed

Noise emissions from demolition sites can significantly impact local communities. To minimise disruption, Local Authorities often require demolition noise to be managed under planning conditions (for a DEMP or DMP) or Section 61 consents (Control of Pollution Act 1974). Monitoring is essential to:

  • Demonstrate compliance with Section 61 consents and planning conditions;
  • Compliance with DEMPs and DMPS;
  • Identify and mitigate potential nuisances before they escalate into complaints;

Even if a s.61 consent is not required, noise monitoring may be required by stakeholders, clients, and agreements with neighbouring businesses. It can also be used to avoid a s.60 notice being imposed.


Our Noise Monitoring Approach

We deploy SV307A Class 1 sound level meters with advanced functionality, including with options for:

  • AI-based sound classification, distinguishing construction activities from background sources such as traffic or weather;
  • A dose function, which accumulates site noise exposure relative to the consented trigger level. This allows real-time alerts to be issued before exceedances occur, enabling site teams to take immediate corrective action and remain compliant with Section 61 limits;
  • Remote, continuous monitoring with secure online access for contractors, clients, regulators and stakeholders.

Deliverables

  • Baseline noise surveys before works commence;
  • Continuous LAeq,T LAFMax and LA90,T monitoring with remote access.- Automated event detection and AI-based source identification;
  • Dose-based alerts to avoid trigger level or Section 61 exceedances;
  • Weekly or monthly compliance reporting against BS 5228 ‘Noise and Vibration Control on Construction and Open Sites’.
