Silk District, Whitechapel

Background

Peldon Rose, a leading workplace design and fit-out company, commissioned Anderson Acoustics to review the internal and external noise levels from building services in the commercial units of the Silk District development in Whitechapel, London.

The goal was to ensure that the noise levels from the ventilation systems and external plant met the project’s acoustic requirements.

What we did

Our assessment focused on two main areas:

  • Internal Noise Levels: Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery Units (MVHRUs) and Fan Coil Units (FCUs)
  • External Noise Levels: Condensers serving the ventilation system in two buildings, Block A and Block B, across three plant rooms.

Using detailed acoustic modelling, we predicted noise levels within the commercial spaces and at the nearest sensitive receptors, accounting for room characteristics, equipment directivity, and acoustic screening.

Conclusion

The project’s acoustic requirements were met in most areas, with minor exceedances considered acceptable for internal noise and unlikely to affect overall acoustic comfort. For external noise, effective mitigation measures were proposed to ensure compliance, including the installation of acoustic louvres and housing condensers in acoustic enclosures to reduce noise levels.
