Heathrow Airport Airspace Trials Noise Support

Background

Heathrow Airport, as one of the busiest airports in the world, constantly seeks to enhance its operational efficiency while minimising its environmental impact, particularly concerning aircraft noise. With the introduction of Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) across Europe and the UK Airspace Modernisation Project, Heathrow Airport Ltd has conducted several trials to explore new operational procedures aimed at reducing noise exposure and improving community response.

What We Did

Our team at Anderson Acoustics Ltd was commissioned by Heathrow Airport Ltd to analyse and assess various airspace trials, including steeper approaches, segmented descents, departure routes, and respite trials. Our focus was to understand the changes in noise exposure and community response associated with these trials and to provide comprehensive analysis and assessment.

Key Services Provided

  • Detailed Noise Exposure Analysis: We conducted specific and detailed analysis of the noise exposure resulting from trials of new easterly and westerly operations departure Standard Instrument Departures (SIDs). This analysis involved noise modelling using industry-standard software such as Integrated Noise Model (INM), based on real tracks and departure profiles.
  • Assessment Using Multiple Metrics: Our team utilised a variety of metrics to assess the impact of airspace trials on noise exposure and community response. These metrics included Ldn (day-night average sound level), Lden (day-evening-night average sound level), and other relevant indicators to provide a comprehensive evaluation of noise impacts.
  • Independent Verification: To ensure the reliability and accuracy of our noise modelling, our work was independently verified by NLR (Dutch Transportation Research organisation). The verification process confirmed that our modelling approach was robust and reliable, with modelled noise levels typically within +/- 1dB of the average measured noise levels.
  • Reporting and Key Findings Presentation: We presented our analysis results and key findings in a comprehensive report format, providing Heathrow Airport Ltd with valuable insights into the noise implications of the airspace trials. Our report included detailed information on noise levels, community response, and recommendations for further actions or modifications to trial procedures.

Conclusion

Our comprehensive analysis and assessment of airspace trials supported Heathrow Airport Ltd in making informed decisions to minimise noise impacts and enhance community relations. By providing reliable noise modelling and thorough evaluation, we contributed to the ongoing efforts to balance operational efficiency with environmental considerations at one of the world’s busiest airports.
