Background
When Dublin Weston Airport planned a new Search and Rescue (SAR) facility to replace operations previously based at Dublin Airport, Anderson Acoustics was commissioned to assess how helicopter activity might affect local communities and the surrounding environment. The aim was simple but vital – to make sure life-saving missions could operate safely and effectively, without creating unnecessary disturbance.
Approach
Our team carried out a comprehensive noise assessment for Agusta Westland AW189 helicopters, expected to fly around three missions a week, with only occasional night-time operations. Baseline sound measurements were taken across the local area, and a detailed 3D noise model was built using CadnaA software to simulate helicopter movements.
We reviewed relevant guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO) and European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to ensure the analysis met international standards and reflected real-world community sensitivities.
Findings
The results showed that even at the closest homes, predicted maximum noise levels (up to 82 dB LAmax) were within thresholds where sleep disturbance is unlikely. The chance of awakening due to helicopter noise was low – around 28% for the nearest receptors – while sound levels around the nearby stud farm were well below criteria for animal disturbance.
To further minimise impact, we proposed noise-preferential routes avoiding sensitive areas, limits on non-essential night-time flights, strict maintenance practices, and an open communication plan, including a community liaison officer to handle feedback and share information about SAR operations.
Outcome
The study confirmed that the proposed SAR facility could operate with minimal noise impact while delivering an essential public service.
The project demonstrated our strengths in aviation noise modelling, impact assessment, and clear, pragmatic communication. By blending technical precision with operational understanding, our team helped Dublin Weston Airport design a facility that protects both community wellbeing and mission readiness – showing how responsible noise management can support even the most critical operations.
Planning permission was secured in 2024.
