Background
Surrey County Council commissioned Anderson Acoustics to develop an Air Quality and Dust Risk Assessment and Management Plan for the proposed development at St. Paul’s CofE Infant School in Tongham, Surrey.
The project involves the construction of a double-height extension to the rear of the school hall, an enlarged car park, two new multi-use games areas, and the reinstatement of a grass playing field.
What we did
The primary objective of this project was to ensure that the construction activities would not significantly impact air quality or cause dust-related issues for the surrounding community, including the students and staff at the school.
Air Quality Guidance and Baseline Conditions:
- The pollutants considered in the assessment were nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5)
- The assessment followed the IAQM Guidance on the assessment of dust from demolition and construction
Air Quality and Dust Risk Assessment and Management Plan
- The assessment identified the potential risks to human health, dust soiling, and ecological receptors
- The site was considered as Low Risk for dust soiling and human health effects
- The plan included site-specific mitigation measures to control dust emissions and ensure that the effects of the proposed works would not be significant
Project Progress
Surrey County Council granted planning permission on 30th October 2024 stating that ‘The construction of the development hereby permitted shall be carried out in accordance with Sections 3 and 5 of the Air Quality and Dust Management Plan Version 1.0 dated 22 April 2024 submitted as part of the application’.
