Dining halls are often overlooked in school acoustic discussions, despite being central to pupils’ daily experience and, in many schools, doubling as multi-purpose halls. This research helps bridge that gap by combining acoustic measurements with pupil feedback to understand what drives comfort in school dining spaces.
What the study looked at
BB93 is the primary guidance document used in England and Wales to set acoustic performance targets for schools, including dining and multi-purpose halls. BB93 criteria can be summarised as:
- Dedicated dining halls: target Tmf ≤ 1.0 s (new build) and ≤ 1.5 s (refurbishment); indoor ambient noise targets 45 dB (new build) and 50 dB (refurbishment);
- Multi-purpose halls: target Tmf 0.8–1.2 s (new build) and 0.8–1.5 s (refurbishment); indoor ambient noise targets 35 dB (new build) and 40 dB (refurbishment).
The study collected pupil feedback from 313 pupils across five schools and measured both reverberation time (RT / Tmf) and indoor ambient noise levels (IANL) in each dining hall.
What pupils reported
Two findings stand out across the survey:
- 78% of pupils described the dining hall as “too loud” or “quite loud”;
- 58% described the noise as “quite” or “very” annoying;
The survey also identified wider impacts for some pupils, including 25% reporting difficulty concentrating after lunch due to dining hall noise, and around 20–21% reporting feeling tired or overwhelmed.
Compliance does not always equal comfort
The measured results were reported as BB93 compliant across the sample. However, the pupil feedback shows that a dining hall can meet current criteria and still be experienced as loud and difficult for conversation during lunch.
This is not an argument against BB93. It is a practical point about how dining halls behave in use: a space can meet minimum acoustic criteria and still be difficult for conversation when it is busy, particularly for pupils who are more sensitive to noise.
What the analysis suggests matters most
The study found clearer relationships between reverberation time and negative pupil experience than between indoor ambient noise and perceived loudness or annoyance. Indoor ambient noise levels were generally well controlled in the measured schools and had weaker links to negative student experiences.
Practical takeaways for education estates and design teams
The research indicates that treating the dining hall as a high-occupancy listening environment and prioritise design decisions that improve speech conditions during busy periods:-
- Review dining hall RT targets early, especially for larger or heavily used halls;
- Use pupil experience as a performance lens, not just compliance, because dining halls are social environments with high occupancy noise;
- Consider inclusive use, as the research highlights that some common management responses (ear defenders, separate rooms) can reduce inclusion if they remove pupils from shared social spaces.
