Human-centred Acoustics - More Than Just A Number

The IOA ‘Human-centred Acoustics’ event last month brought together research, practice and case study experience around a shared question: how do people actually experience, interpret and cope with sound in real places? The day was not simply about moving away from decibels, but about recognising that acoustic environments are filtered through context, expectations, control, trust, vulnerability, activity and prior experience. Across the presentations, the phrase “more than just a number” felt less like a slogan and more like the practical challenge facing acoustics: how to understand people without losing the discipline and usefulness of technical assessment.

A consistent thread through the meeting was that the same sound level can be experienced very differently depending on who is exposed, what they are doing, what choices they have, and whether they feel heard or treated fairly. This came through in environmental noise, healthcare, workplaces and major infrastructure. Rather than presenting human response as a soft add-on to acoustics, the day showed it as central to whether interventions are effective, acceptable and trusted.

Defining The Human Context

The morning sessions set the conceptual basis for the day by focusing on non-acoustic factors and emerging framework thinking. The discussions described non-acoustic factors as influences on the process of perceiving, experiencing, understanding and responding to an acoustic environment. These were not treated as vague background issues, but as elements that can be organised and considered more systematically, including personal, social, situational and physical/contextual domains.

A useful aspect of the morning was the way examples were used to show that sound response is not a single-step reaction to exposure. In the aircraft noise example, response could be influenced by visible aircraft, perceived threat, learned expectations, social cues, disruption to activity, feelings of safety and the perceived ability to cope. This was important because it framed environmental noise as an active appraisal and coping process, rather than only as a measured exposure.

The discussion also opened up questions about policy and assessment. If non-acoustic factors influence response, how should they be recognised without making assessment unworkable or entirely subjective? This tension ran through the day: the need to take human experience seriously, while still creating methods that can be used consistently in practice.

Healthcare, Workplaces and Personal Control

The session, including the SILENTS Study, gave a strong illustration of why sound matters beyond annoyance. Hospital sound environments were discussed in relation to sleep, communication, stress, attention, compassion and patient experience. For staff, the issues were not simply whether noise was loud, but whether the sound environment added to cognitive load, made communication harder, increased fatigue or contributed to burnout. This gave the day a very human dimension: sound can affect whether people feel safe, cared for, able to recover or able to work well.

The workplace acoustics material continued this theme by looking at acoustic privacy, personality and burnout. A particularly useful message was that there is no single “best” acoustic environment for everyone. People vary in their sensitivity, tasks, expectations and preferences. The notes on personal control were especially important here: reducing sound levels alone may not be enough if people have no choice over where they work, how they manage distraction, or whether they can access quieter spaces when needed.

This part of the day linked strongly to wider ideas of adaptive acoustic comfort. A human-centred approach is therefore not just about making spaces quieter; it is also about designing environments that give people usable choices and support different ways of working, concentrating, recovering and coping.

Fairness in Aviation Noise

My paper brought the aviation noise perspective into this wider human-centred discussion through the theme of fairness. The Fair and Equitable Distribution work is particularly relevant because aviation noise is not only a question of total exposure, but also of how noise is distributed between communities, how trade-offs are explained, and whether those affected feel the process has been transparent and credible.

The paper sat naturally alongside the morning themes because perceived fairness is a non-acoustic factor with very practical consequences. Communities are unlikely to judge flight path design only by an averaged metric but using metrics that reflect the lived experience. They also respond to whether impacts appear balanced, whether concentrated burdens are acknowledged, whether options are explained clearly, and whether engagement feels meaningful rather than tokenistic.

This gave the day an important bridge between research and public decision-making. In aviation, as in healthcare and workplace acoustics, human-centred acoustics is not about replacing measurement with opinion. It is about recognising that acceptability, trust and response are shaped by the way sound is distributed, explained and experienced.

Practical Implementation and Closing Thoughts

The later infrastructure case study material, including construction noise management and compensation approaches, showed what happens when human-centred thinking has to be applied in real projects. The discussion covered mitigation, temporary relocation, respite accommodation and compensation, but also the governance challenges: evidencing claims, communicating between contractors and affected people, managing expectations, and considering individual circumstances.

One of the useful messages from this part of the day was that human-centred acoustics inevitably adds complexity. It asks practitioners to think about timing, duration, cumulative effects, surrounding context, susceptibility, disadvantage and coping capacity. That complexity is not a reason to ignore human experience, but it does mean that methods need to be clear, fair and practical enough to support real decisions.

Overall, the day suggested that human-centred acoustics is becoming a more mature and necessary part of the profession. The most persuasive message was not that acoustic numbers are unimportant, but that numbers only become meaningful when connected to people, context and consequences. The event showed a profession increasingly interested in the “so what” of sound: who is affected, how they are affected, what choices they have, and whether the response to them is fair, proportionate and trusted.

This was an enjoyable day, connecting with friends, old and new – very fitting for a human centred event! The day explored human-centred acoustics and to me showed that it is not a retreat from technical assessment. It is a broadening of the question: from “what is the sound level?” to “What does this sound mean for people, what choices do they have, and how can those responsible respond in a way that feels fair, practical and trusted?”
