Vibration Isolation in Building Services

Maksims Jelovenko, Senior Acoustic Consultant, recently delivered a technical training workshop for the consultancy team focusing on vibration isolation in building services.

As acoustic consultants, our role is to identify vibration risks, carry out appropriate assessments, and provide clear, project-specific advice. This includes setting out straightforward risk statements and offering practical guidance for plant installations where vibration control is critical. Our involvement can happen at any project stage, but this training emphasised the value of aligning acoustic requirements with the wider design team as early as possible.

During the session, the team discussed key principles of vibration isolation and noise transfer, including how vibration from building services can transmit into adjacent or nearby spaces. The group also reviewed how effective coordination with structural and MEP engineers helps ensure that vibration isolation solutions are technically robust, buildable, and cost-effective.

Understanding potential noise transfer between plantrooms and sensitive spaces is also essential, and the workshop reinforced the importance of carrying out these checks using appropriate calculation methods.

The session also covered opportunities to future-proof designs, highlighting how simple yet effective measures can help manage potential changes over the life of the plant, such as increased vibration as equipment ages or as operational requirements evolve.
