Background
Jenner (Contractors) Ltd commissioned Anderson Acoustics to conduct a noise impact assessment to support a planning application for the redevelopment of land located south of Church Lane, Seasalter. The proposed development includes the erection of 220 residential dwellings, associated highways infrastructure, public open space, and a dedicated wildlife area.
What we did
The primary objective of the noise impact assessment was to evaluate the environmental noise levels at the site and provide recommendations for noise mitigation measures to ensure a suitable living environment for future residents.
The assessment aimed to:
- Determine baseline noise levels at the site.
- Assess the potential noise impact from the proposed development.
- Provide recommendations for noise mitigation measures.
Methodology
The assessment involved a detailed environmental noise survey conducted over a five-day period. Noise measurements were taken at two locations on the site to capture the prevailing noise conditions. The dominant noise source was identified as road traffic from the A299 dual carriageway.
Key Findings
- Baseline Noise Levels: The noise survey revealed that the site is exposed to varying levels of noise, with higher levels near the eastern boundary adjacent to the A299.
- Noise Risk Assessment: The site was categorized as a ‘Medium to High Risk’ area according to the ProPG Stage 1 – Initial Site Risk assessment guidelines.
Recommendations
Recommendations included the use of mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) systems for dwellings in high-risk areas, enhanced glazing for noise reduction, and the provision of alternative quieter external amenity areas, specifically: –
- Glazing and Ventilation: Enhanced glazing and MVHR systems for dwellings facing the A299 to ensure suitable internal noise levels.
- External Amenity Areas: The provision of a large public open space and dedicated wildlife area along the western boundary of the site to offer residents a quieter alternative to private gardens exposed to higher noise levels.
- Building Layout: The orientation and layout of buildings designed to minimize noise exposure to habitable rooms.
Conclusion
The noise impact assessment provided comprehensive insights into the noise environment at the proposed development site. The recommended noise mitigation measures will ensure that the future residents of the development enjoy a comfortable and quiet living environment.
