Background
Midshire Estates Ltd commissioned Anderson Acoustics to conduct a planning noise impact assessment for a proposed residential development at Dukes Gate, Chiswick. The project involves extending an existing building to provide nine additional apartments.
What we did
Our involvement aimed to:-
- Assess the existing noise environment at the site
- Determine the potential noise impact of the proposed extension
- Provide recommendations to ensure an acceptable internal noise environment within the new dwellings
Noise Survey
Measurements were taken at two positions: the north façade (MP2) and the east façade (MP1) of the existing building.
Noise Modelling
A detailed 3D environmental noise model was created using the baseline noise measurement results. The model considered factors such as topographical conditions, ground absorption, atmospheric absorption, acoustic reflections, and acoustic screening.
Recommendations
Internal Noise Levels
- The external building fabric should include glazing with differing pane thicknesses to ensure suitable internal noise levels
- Standard acoustically rated through-the-frame trickle ventilators should be included in the design of bedrooms and living rooms
Mitigation Measures
- Introduce a 2m high closed timber fence for the ground floor garden closest to the railway line to mitigate noise levels
- Acoustic performance targets set for the external envelope (non-glazed areas)
Alternative Amenity Spaces
- Provide residents with access to quieter alternative amenity spaces, such as Turnham Green and Acton Green Common, which are within a 5-minute walking distance from the development
Conclusion
Our noise impact assessment provided a comprehensive analysis of the existing noise environment and the potential impact of the proposed extension.
By implementing the recommended mitigation measures, Midshire Estates Ltd can ensure that the new dwellings achieve an acceptable internal noise environment, thereby enhancing the overall quality of life for future residents.
