Background
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust commissioned us to conduct a Noise at Work (N@W) assessment for the service areas of Addenbrooke’s Hospital
What we did
We were commissioned to assess the noise exposure experienced by warehouse staff during their daily operations, with a focus on noisy activities such as transporting rolling cages, loading and unloading lorries, and operating tugs.
Noise Criteria
The assessment was carried out in accordance with the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, which specify required actions based on employees’ daily or weekly cumulative noise exposure. The regulations also impose limits on peak sound pressure levels, which in this context were primarily associated with impulsive noise sources such as the sudden impact of rolling cages or the abrupt loading and unloading of goods.
Description of Hospital Service Areas
The hospital’s service infrastructure comprises the following key areas:
- Service Yard: Designated for the storage of cages and loading/unloading lorries.
- Service Tunnels: Passages located beneath the ground floor, used for the internal transport of goods and equipment.
- Warehouse: Functions as a central supply storage area and provides a connection between the service yard and the service tunnels.
Noise Measurements
Noise measurements were conducted at various locations and during a range of operating activities to capture a representative sample of the noise levels encountered by the staff.
Key Findings
- Peak Noise Levels: The highest noise levels were observed within the tunnels and during tasks involving the operation of loaded tugs.
- Ambient Noise Levels: Significantly lower noise levels were recorded in the warehouse and procurement office.
- Occupational Exposure: Noise exposure monitoring for warehouse operatives indicated conditions consistent with environments where control measures are typically considered to manage the risk of hearing-related harm.
Noise Exposure Mitigation Measures
To mitigate noise exposure, we recommended the following measures:
- Acoustic Panels: Install sound-absorbing panels in the tunnel to reduce the overall reverberant sound within the large space.
- Rubber Matting: Install rubber matting on the floor to dampen vibrations generated by tug and cage wheels, which contribute to excessive shaking and noise during movement.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Provide over-ear hearing protection to tug operators.
Conclusion
The assessment highlighted areas within the hospital’s service environment where noise levels are elevated. By adopting the recommended noise control strategies and ensuring appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE), Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust can further support the health and safety of its staff.
