Background
In August 2022, Dublin Weston Airport commissioned Anderson Acoustics to undertake an environmental noise survey around the airfield in Leixlip, County Dublin. As the airport explored potential service expansion, the study aimed to capture how aircraft noise affects nearby communities and to provide practical recommendations for managing it responsibly.
Approach
Over five days in August and September, we measured environmental noise at 14 locations around the airport, recording aircraft take-offs, landings, and circuit operations. Both attended and unattended monitoring were used to ensure that measured sound levels could be confidently linked to aircraft activity and observed audibility.
The results were assessed against national guidelines and international studies on community annoyance, taking into account both acoustic and non-acoustic factors.
Findings
The survey showed that aircraft were not a dominant source of noise in most areas. Daytime sound levels (LAeq,16hr) typically ranged from 39 to 52 dB, similar to everyday background levels in suburban settings. However, residents’ experiences varied. Some were largely indifferent or had grown used to aircraft movements, while some expressed frustration about jet activity during the summer months and its effect on daily routines.
These differing reactions highlighted the influence of non-acoustic factors, such as expectations, communication, and trust, on how communities perceive noise.
Outcome
The study concluded that while aircraft noise around Weston Airport is within acceptable limits, there are opportunities to strengthen relationships with local residents. We recommended further community engagement to explore additional mitigation options and address non-acoustic influences on perception.
Suggestions included publishing clear flight circuit schedules, maintaining predictable operating patterns, and ensuring open communication with the community to enhance transparency and fairness.
This project showcased our strengths in environmental monitoring, data interpretation, and community engagement. By combining precise acoustic assessment with real-world social understanding, the team helped Weston Airport build a clearer picture of its current noise environment – and a stronger foundation for open, informed dialogue with its neighbours.
