New CPD – Acoustic Design Made Easy

Last month Emma Greenland delivered a Lunch and Learn session to the Estates Team at the University of Westminster’s Little Titchfield Street Campus.

It was great to use the newly refurbished basement space too, a project which we advised on last year. It was an opportunity to test the acoustic performance of the space in terms of audibility and speech clarity, particularly for those listening in online.

The session entitled ‘Acoustic Design Made Easy‘ emphasizes the benefits of good acoustic design and its impact on the world, helping to spot design risks and opportunities for optimal solutions. Various aspects of acoustic design were discussed, including building services noise, noise ingress, internal sound insulation, and room acoustics. Emma also explained the objectives of BREEAM Hea05, such as providing suitable indoor ambient noise levels, attenuating airborne sound, controlling impact sound, and ensuring suitable reverberation times for clear communication.

The session also highlights the importance of universal acoustic design, addressing the needs of individuals with disabilities, including hearing impairments, and ensuring psychological safety and speech privacy in educational settings and covers the prevalence of listening disadvantages in higher education and the benefits of listening aids.

We are passionate about making complex acoustic design topics understandable and providing clear advice on navigating performance standards and our Lunch and Learn sessions are a great channel through which to do this.
